Motrin (Ibuprofen)

Drug Uses

The drug is prescribed for various diseases. It is commonly used for relief of symptoms of arthritis and osteoarthritis, backache and toothache. The medicine is used in case of mild to moderate pain. Women take Motrin for the treatment of menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea).

How Taken

A maximum daily dose is 3200 mg. Do not exceed it. The dose is set according to each patient’s disease and his health condition. A suggested dose is 200-400 mg every 4-6 hours. A usual daily dose is 800-1200 mg.

Missed Dose

If you are taking Motrin on a regular schedule take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not take extra medication to make up the missed dose.

Storage

Motrin is stored at temperature between 20-25 degrees C (68-77 degrees F).

Possible Side Effects

The most typical side effects you may experience with Motrin pill are gastrointestinal and the ones related to Central nervous system. If you experience black, tarry stools or blood in vomit ask for an emergency medical help. These symptoms are likely to occur when there is stomach damage like ulceration of the stomach. Sometimes ulceration occurs without the symptoms mentioned above. In case of experiencing the listed below serious side effects, stop taking Ibuprofen and seek for medical attention immediately:

  • abdominal cramps, muscle cramps or tingling;
  • bleeding gastric ulcers or mouth ulcers;
  • an allergic reaction (closing of the throat, shortness of breath; swelling of the tongue, or face)
  • hearing loss;
  • scotomata; blurred or diminished vision;
  • bronchospasm, indigestion or heartburn;
  • seizures

Less serious side effects are more likely to occur. In this case keep taking the medicine and talk to your doctor about one of the following side effects:
  • nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation;
  • headache, nervousness, dizziness;
  • fatigue or weakness;
  • irregular menstrual periods;
  • decreased appetite

More Information

Ibuprofen is not recommended in pregnancy as a premature closure of the ductus arteriosus may occur.
